Great Danes - Pictures
Great Danes - General DescriptionGreat Danes feature a wonderfully noble and firm appearance, so it is for naught that the dog is often termed 'the Apollo of all dogs'. The dog's body reveals a perfect combination of strength, big size, majesty and lightness. These dogs should possess courage, integrity and amicability.Great Danes - Breed DescriptionOne of the most distinctive features of the Great Dane breed is that the masculinity of males and the femininity of females are clearly observable in the Great Danes. Males are 30-32 inches high, and females are 28-30 inches high at the shoulders. Species under the lower limit should be disqualified. Dogs weigh 120-200 pounds, bitches - 100-130 pounds. The head is long and narrow. The profile view reveals a clearly defined frontal stop, the flat of the skull being parallel to that of the bridge of the nose. The eyes are round, dark and intelligent. The ears are long and erect, either cropped or natural. Teeth are well formed and they close in a scissors bite. Great Danes have long and muscular necks, perfectly straight legs, and the feet are round, featuring dark nails. Thighs are muscular and springy, providing for light and powerful drive. The tail is of medium length, its tip reaching the hock joint. Coat is dense, smooth, sleek and short, and it lies close to the body. There is no strict limitation on the Great Dane coat color, which can occur in fawn, brindle, black, blue, mantle harlequin and Merle (rare). Blue species can feature eyes of lighter color. Great Danes - TemperamentGreat Danes are loving, loyal and dependable companions. They are friendly, affable and good with children. At the same time, they are protective and sometime dog aggressive. Their big size necessitates proper socialization in puppyhood, and they must be taught not to lean against people. Danes are a lot more easily trainable in puppyhood than as grown-ups.
