Great Danes are short-lived, life span averaging 7-10 years. Great Danes often suffer from hip dysplasia, retinal dysplasia, metabolic bone diseases (affecting the solidity of bones), osteochondritis, osteochondrosis and so forth. These dogs often suffer from ear infection, tumors and respiratory diseases.

Bloating can be a serious problem. Enlarged stomach due to gas accumulation causes it. Usually, gastric torsion or physical activity triggers it, if it takes place shortly after feeding. Bloating can be life threatening and requires immediate veterinary help.

Great Danes - Care and Training

Puppies of the Great Dane grow rapidly, and therefore they require special care and training regime. Do not expose your puppy to excessive physical strain until it is 18 months old because it may result in improper development of the skeleton. Great Danes have no undercoat, thus, exposure to sharp temperature falls must be avoided.

Vaccinate your pups against parvo, distemper and parainfluenza every 3 weeks, between the ages of 6 weeks and 4 months. After 4 months, the span between inoculations increases up to 6 to 12 months. Rabies shots should be made at 4 months and 1 year, and every 3 years after that age. The age of 4 months is also good for Kennel cough and worm prevention.

Obedience training is absolute. Start at 4 months, and one must be well aware of all necessary procedures and lessons in order to avoid problems when the dog achieves adulthood. Potty- and chew training are paramount. It is very important to choose the proper tactics. Never hurt your puppy for wrongdoings. The punishment must be firm, but moderate. Do not exercise punishment if the deed was done long before you notice the result, because the dog won't understand the reason of punishment at this time.

Coat does not require too much grooming. They demand weekly bathing and nail trimming. When bathing, do not expose your dog's ears to water and clean them regularly to prevent ear mites and other infectious disorders. Tooth brushing is also necessary because Great Danes are prone to tooth decay.

Great Danes Breeders - The ancestors of Great Danes are believed to have originated in Tibet. They were used to manage cattle and helped people hunt. The first drawings of such dogs are dated as far back as the 12th century BC. Bit by bit, the dogs spread across Europe. The Romans are known to have dealt with the ancestors of Great Danes. They used them as war and guard dogs.

In the medieval, the dogs were rather common in Europe. Crosses of Mastiffs with other dogs resulted in the production of the dogs used mainly in hunting. They were often referred to as German Mastiffs. They were good in hunting the wild boar. The dogs had to be strong and endurable. Meanwhile, they had to have a pleasing appearance. As a matter of fact, they were often around the noble and were used to guard the castles of the royalty.

Great Danes Pictures - Great Danes originated in Germany around 400 years ago. They were meant to hunt a wild boar. Naturally enough the Dane's great size allows some to use the animal as a guard dog. Contrary to some people's conceptions, the Great Dane is not aggressive. It is known as a friendly, sensitive, intelligent dog. It does perfectly well with children and other pets. Note that the Great Dane prefers living indoors, for human companionship is the most enjoyable thing for this creature.

Great Danes are intelligent dogs and combine dignity, strength, and elegance together with their imposing appearance. However, they require a lot of attention and companionship. Great Danes are spirited, courageous, friendly and very dependable. Great Danes can make excellent family pets and is one of the giant working breeds.

Great Danes Puppies - Great Danes are not the dogs for you if you do not enjoy spending long hours walking accompanied by a merry sensitive creature. It is a giant dog that needs a lot of exercise. Please, think whether you can provide it with enough attention and interaction. Keep in mind that this breed is very sociable. It does not seem to realize how big it is in comparison with other pets. It behaves like a cat sometimes, trying to climb on your lap in search of love.

Little cute puppies usually grow into dogs weighing from 135 to 190 pounds. The CKC recorded once a dog weighing 238 pounds and standing 4.5 inches at shoulder. This fact is likely to impress one who is not ready to supply a dog with a few premium meals a day. Remember that a great-sized dog is not desirable. Do not choose the biggest puppy in the litter since overweight Great Danes are less disease-resistant.

Great Danes - Great Danes are the second tallest of all the dog breeds with the Irish Wolfhound as tallest of them all. The dog has an air of dignity and nobility, but it also loves to romp and play. It's a good idea to begin training early with this dog, when it's still small enough to control! Despite their intimidating size, Great Danes are very gentle and will only show anger when provoked. Though it is a large dog, it should not always be kept outside or in a kennel. The Great Dane much prefers and enjoys the comforts of being indoors where it can be close to its family.

Despite the fact that they are called Danes in English, they did not originate in Denmark. The Great Dane breed of today originated in Germany. There is also some evidence that similar dogs lived in ancient Rome and Greece. It is said that Asiatic people invaded part of Germany in 407 A.D. and introduced a mastiff-like dog. Germans then crossed this dog with the Irish Wolfhound and, some believe, the Mastiff. They were used for such tasks as tracking, watchdog and carting.
