When you have decided upon buying a puppy, you will inevitably face one of the most challenging problems, which is the choice of a breeder, who produces healthy and worthwhile Great Danes. It is a rocky path, and requires a substantial bulk of knowledge and mastery of numerous tools, which can come in handy when it comes to disentangling the intricacies of choice.

Now let us get back to that old thing about what to do, where to go and what to beware of in finding a knowledgeable, reputable and reliable breeder. First, steer clear of pet shops, because it is more than likely that pet shop pups arrive at stores from 'puppy mills', which produce scores and hundreds of puppies and where they are much less than likely to receive necessary veterinarian control or proper care.

For information, it is better to turn to your local rescue or animal control organization or a breeders club, where you can receive a lot of information about reputable breeders and their pets. You can also obtain knowledge at a dog show, where you can talk to breeders.

Great Danes - Finding a Breeder

When visiting a Great Dane breeder, look around his /her house. Is it clean or dirty? How many puppies and dogs are there in the house and how well do they look? Also, see what actually concerns the breeder. If he or she seems hasty to get the puppies off his/her hands, you had better consider another option.

Pay attention to the overall condition of the puppies. They should be lively and playful. Well-socialized puppies are never shy or nervous. If you notice that, at your slightest move toward them, they run for shelter or shake with fear then they may have been abused or mistreated. In this case, you may wish call to your local humane society.

True breeders never keep many litters because otherwise they would not physically be capable of properly monitoring their pups' health and good living conditions. If you notice long rows of cages in the backyard with large quantities of puppies in them, you are dealing with a puppy mill and should run away from this alleged breeder, because you will almost certainly buy a diseased Great Dane from this breeder.

A good breeder must have a written contract or guarantee, allowing for return of a low quality puppy. Moreover, there must be AKC registration papers, although it is quite common for untrue breeders to falsify these papers. Dog show certificates and photographs are of great help, because they allow us to compare the pup's real behavior with the description, and its appearance with the photo image.

Reputable breeders care a great deal about where their puppies are going. Therefore, they ask questions to potential buyers about their families, homes and their attitude toward the breed. A good breeder will never sell his Great Danes to you if he or she considers you unfit for this breed.
