It is said that Asiatic people invaded part of Germany in 407 A.D. and introduced a mastiff-like dog. Germans then crossed this dog with the Irish Wolfhound and, some believe, the Mastiff. They were used for such tasks as tracking, watchdog and carting.

Despite the fact that they are called Danes in English, they did not originate in Denmark. The breed of today originated in Germany. There is also some evidence that similar dogs lived in ancient Rome and Greece; the dogs have always been used as pets and companions.
